Addressing a Local Crisis

Food insecurity is a staggering reality in our islands, with 1 in 3 households impacted. At the same time, countless pounds of fresh, local fruit go to waste in backyards across the state. Kokua Tree saw this disconnect and created a simple, powerful solution: harvest the excess to feed the hungry.

In just three years, these students have made a remarkable impact:

• $14,000+ in market-value produce donated to local families.

• 10,000 lbs of carbon dioxide waste reduced by diverting rotting fruit from landfills.

  
  

Seeing the Value in Youth Leadership

We were immediately struck by Kokua Tree’s ability to mobilize students from all over the island of Oahu. This isn't just a weekend project; it is a scalable model for reducing food waste and improving nutrition in our community. We saw an organization that was growing rapidly and needed the right infrastructure to keep up with its own success.

Providing the Tools for Growth

To support their expanding mission, Malama Pacific Foundation has provided a grant to help Kokua Tree scale their operations. This funding is being put to work immediately to:

• Equip New Volunteers: As more students join the mission, the grant provides essential tools like fruit pickers and scales.

• Maintain Safety and Sustainability: Replacing worn equipment and covering operational costs (like liability insurance) ensures the team can work safely on uneven terrain.
